Use DomainKits MCP to Let AI Analyze Newly Registered .app Domains
Newly registered .app domains averaged 3,829 a day in August, up 24.2% from April. Over the same period, daily .com registrations rose 0.6%.
On 19 September 2026, we used an AI assistant connected to the DomainKits MCP server to examine the daily trend, the 60-day registration index, a .com comparison and the live feed. The domain figures below come from 25 tool calls made that day.
1. The .app registration trend
tld_trends returns up to 180 days of daily counts for either new registrations or active domains.
Across the 180-day series, active .app domains rose from 1,143,326 on 24 March to 1,653,303 on 19 September, a gain of 509,977, or 44.6%. New registrations averaged 3,082 a day in April, 3,829 in August and 3,976 in the first 17 days of September.
On 20 May, 12,464 .app domains were registered. The seven-day average reached 6,176 during the late-May surge, then fell back to about 3,019 at the end of June, close to April's daily average. Registrations rose again in July. From 8 July to 17 September, the seven-day average stayed between 3,623 and 4,486.
2. The last 60 days
A query to nrds with tld=app and no keyword returned 229,443 records from the 60-day index. Dividing by 60 gives a provisional average of 3,824 a day; the most recent days were still filling in.
Filtering by registration term gave 220,738 names registered for one year (96.2%), 8,412 for two to five years (3.7%) and 293 for six or more.
DomainKits detected marketplace listings for 1,866 records, or 0.81%, at query time. Listings outside its coverage are not counted, and a name without a detected listing may still be held for resale.
3. A comparison with .com
Repeating the queries with tld=com gave the following comparison.

The 60-day index contains about 35 times as many new .com registrations as .app registrations. In April, there were 23.1 new .app registrations for every 1,000 in .com; by August, that had risen to 28.5. The comparison does not account for promotions, seasonality, changes in registration channels or changes in data coverage. Marketplace detection may also cover the two extensions differently.
Names beginning with "get" or "use" accounted for 1.31% of the .app records in the 60-day index and 0.67% of .com records. The prefixes "try" and "join" were about equally common in both. The query matches string prefixes, without checking website content or changes in naming habits over time.
4. The live feed
nrds_live holds the last three days of registrations, with timestamps to the second and names split into words such as "cash cadence", "season cue" and "velo calc".
The feed returned 10,452 .app names. With no date filter available, the assistant worked through results ordered newest first and located the date boundary in 5 calls. It counted 1,749 names registered on 19 September by 21:35 UTC. The day was still in progress and feed coverage was unknown, so this partial count cannot be compared with earlier full-day totals.
App-store comparisons
Appfigures reported that worldwide app releases rose 60% year over year in Q1 2026, and 80% on the iOS App Store. Sensor Tower figures reported in April as submissions put the quarter at 235,800, up 84%. A July report of new apps released counted about 560,000 in the first half, against roughly 600,000 for all of 2025. These figures retain the measures used by each report.
The reports suggest AI coding tools as a possible driver. The domain queries do not test that explanation: the time windows differ, and no domains have been matched to individual apps. One developer can register several names, including names that do not become products. The July report also found that App Store downloads grew 2% while new releases doubled in the first half of 2026. Domain registration terms, listings and renewals alone cannot establish whether a product launched or found users.
