Expired Domain Search: More Than 10 Million Names Before They Drop
More than 10 million names sit in DomainKits' expired domain records: past their expiration date, in the registry's 30-day redemption period, or in the final days of pending delete. All of them are still registered. The ones that are not renewed or restored will be released in the coming weeks. The stages follow ICANN's expiration policy, a registrar grace period of up to 45 days, then 30 days of redemption, then about five days of pending delete (policy summary, status codes). Names renewed during the grace period, sold at a registrar's expiry auction, or restored during redemption leave this path.
Nobody reads 10 million names. This piece shows the filters in the expired domain search that cut the pool down to the names worth your time, with .com on September 15, 2026 as the example.
Start with the stage

On September 15, .com held 1,604,940 names in the expired stage, 2,805,728 in redemption and 450,704 in pending delete. Setting Status to Pending Delete cuts the .com pool from 4,861,372 to 450,704 names, all within days of release. Expired keeps the 1,604,940 names that the registrar can still renew or auction, the earliest stage in the records. Redemption can be the largest stage because a name stays there for the full 30 days unless restored, while names leave the expired stage continuously as registrars renew, auction or delete them.
Catch them early

Newly Expired keeps only the names that entered the expired stage within roughly the past three days.
Pick an extension, or all of them

Browse by TLD with app entered limits the pool to 53,337 names; dev, to 11,459. Keyword searches every extension at once. The eight extensions counted for this piece:
| Extension | Expired | Redemption | Pending delete | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| .com | 1,604,940 | 2,805,728 | 450,704 | 4,861,372 |
| .net | 87,354 | 170,391 | 26,274 | 284,019 |
| .online | 102,611 | 137,705 | 18,974 | 259,290 |
| .org | 80,158 | 148,649 | 29,438 | 258,245 |
| .info | 86,521 | 133,634 | 26,661 | 246,816 |
| .site | 66,538 | 95,926 | 13,724 | 176,188 |
| .app | 15,799 | 32,426 | 5,112 | 53,337 |
| .dev | 1,677 | 8,677 | 1,105 | 11,459 |
| Eight extensions | 2,045,598 | 3,533,136 | 571,992 | 6,150,726 |
Narrow by age, length and type

Age counts whole years since the current registration date on record; a name that dropped and was registered again starts at zero. In .com pending delete, 84.0% of names are five years old or less. 20+y leaves 3,721 of the 450,704, and 10-20y leaves 24,226. Length, Type, Hold and TLD Count cut the same way: names under five characters, letters only, no registry hold, or a prefix registered in more than 30 other extensions.
Sort, then export

Sort by age, length or how many extensions share the prefix, then export the result set. Because the pool turns over daily, a search made later will not match the counts here exactly.
